The Coffee Shelf
In 2016, The Coffee Shelf opened its doors in Chapin, SC and they had a goal to become the central meeting spot for the area. Not only can people come in and enjoy a delicious cup of coffee while reading a great book, they can also meet up with church groups, book clubs, finish school assignments, and even host book launches.
The Coffee Shelf truly has some of the best coffee in the area. Not only is their house brew coffee spectacular, they also have lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, and more. If you're not a hot coffee drinker, don't worry because they have several iced and frozen options for you to try. Something unique about the shop is that they've created a menu of drinks based on different literary characters!
Community involvement is very important at the Coffee Shelf. Not only have they become a go-to community gathering spot, but since opening they've also been raising money for a local charity called Sistercare. On top of that, they host a yearly Fall Art Festival for the town.
The Coffee Shelf is open from 6AM-7PM Monday through Friday and 7AM-7PM on the weekends. Make sure to check them out the next time your in Chapin!

Hazelwood Brewing Company
In 2019, Hazelwood Brewing Company opened their doors in Downtown Lexington and they've been brewing amazing beers ever since. What makes the brewery unique from others is that they're a farm-inspired brewery and have been growing their own hops and ingredients for 17 years. They actually grow these products at their farm in Camden named Hazelwood.
The brewery is very community oriented and a favorite local spot in Lexington. Hazelwood is a great place for people to come gather, hangout, and share a beer. Also, along with their 10 beers on tap, they have indoor and outdoor seating areas, fire pits, and food trucks.
Next time you're in Downtown Lexington, make sure to come try out some of their amazing beers and see what's good at the wood!

Hendrix
In 2019, Hendrix opened its doors in the heart of Downtown Columbia. Located on Main Street, the restaurant and bar brings people the best of both worlds by having a farm to table fine dining restaurant downstairs with a lounge and rooftop bar upstairs. Their goal upon opening was to ensure they checked the boxes of a lot of people and to provide a unique experience.
The restaurant switches their menus seasonally, so there’s always something new to try! Hendrix has a great appreciation for the local community and to highlight this, they try to use locally sourced products.
Come check them out whether it’s to enjoy a beverage and a burger on their rooftop bar or for a nicer dinner downstairs… they have it all!

Tiffany's Meeting Place
Tiffany's Meeting Place
Tiffany's Sweets, Eats & Meeting Place has been a family owned business in Columbia since its opening in 1977. Before moving to their newest location in Northeast Columbia, they originally started out in Columbia Mall. Tiffany's specializes in baked goods that are all made from scratch and they've become well- know for their Petit Fours. Fun fact, they sell about a quarter million of them each year.
What's so special about Tiffany's is how they're not just a bakery. They now have a full restaurant along with a bar that has 22 beers on tap that are primarily local. Tiffany's differentiates themselves from their competitors by being farm to table fresh, bringing a different vibe, and having a wide variety of options. The bakery and eatery has become well known in the community not just for their delicious baked goods that have been around for many years, but also for their amazing dishes and the restaurants atmosphere.
Whether you're looking to grab some dessert, meal, or beverage, Tiffany's truly has it all! Next time you're in Northeast Columbia, make sure to check them out.

Lula Drake
Lula Drake
For our Spotlight this month, we have Mary Lane Sloan sitting with Tim Gardner, owner + head sommelier of Lula Drake.
They started in 2016, built around biodynamic, organic and sustainable wines.
What Mary Lane loves about Lula Drake is they let you try anything and all of the employees are great listeners in helping pin point the best wine for you. Tim carefully spends time exposing everyone to wines they aren't familiar with (finally time to take a break from the Chardonnay and Pinot Gris).
Finding the right building was the key to the business. Once they came across this long narrow space with three floors, they found a trap door to a basement with Lula Drake's sea trunk. "The name was in the building" per Tim's wife. In the trunk they even found Lula's calling card with the gold symbols. After adding a stem to resemble a wine glass, the well-known logo we see on Main Street was born.
They boast an impressive upstair event space that holds 100+ people. "It has it's own personality, but very much tied to the downstair space" says Tim.
Lula Drake was created to open the eyes (and palettes) of people in Columbia to things that are different. They're here to help this great district stay local.
There is a variety of this wine list that you don't typically fine in Columbia. It's a place to stretch your imagination with wines that don't have big marketing, but great roots and stories from all over the world.
What's new and fresh for Lula Drake?
Fortified wines; very special spirits that took them a long time to find.
It's a wonderful place to grab a small plate and enjoy a relaxing beverage. They provide a great craft beer selection and amazing grower champagne list for non-wine drinkers.
Lula Drake is open from Tuesday to Saturday at 4 pm and closes at 10 PM on Tuesdays-Wednesdays and 12 AM on Thursday-Saturdays.

Blythewood
Blythewood, SC is about 25 minutes north of Columbia, right up I-77 on your way to Charlotte!
ABOUT THE AREA
Blythewood, SC is about 25 minutes north of Columbia, right up I-77 on your way to Charlotte! A fun fact is that the town wasn't called Blythewood until 1877 and before that it was known as Doko, which is a Native American term for "watering place". As it progressed, it became an actual watering stop for the railroad between Columbia and Charlotte. The town of Blythewood is now a bustling suburb of Columbia.
You know we love the food scene, so we have a couple spots that you have to check out! For some amazing coffee there's the Bloomin' Bean which is a unique spot as it also has its own florist. The Doko Station Pub and Eatery is another one for you to try for some delicious pizza, burgers, and wide variety of craft beer. Lastly, there's Doko Smoke because what's a good southern town without some amazing BBQ?
For some fun things to do, check out Doko Meadows Park which as huge recreational facilities, walking trails, and a 2,500 person amphitheater where you can enjoy local live talent. Locals came together to create a historical society to preserve the towns rich history which you can learn more about at the Blythewood Historical Museum.
Blythewood is really neat when it comes to housing. They have some of the largest developments in the Midlands along with some of the most appointed neighborhoods in the area. There's Cobblestone which is a gated community with a 27 hole golf course and other amenities. You can also check out LongCreek Plantation which is a master plan development with about 20 neighborhoods and 2 different golf course. Their prices range anywhere from starter family to million dollar homes. Blythewood truly has so many options when it comes to housing!

ABOUT THE AREA
Located between Columbia and Camden is where you'll find Lugoff- Elgin which are two small towns! Lugoff is an unincorporated area in Kershaw County while Elgin is an incorporated town founded in the late 1800s. Only about a mile square, Elgin is a small town with a lot of rich history.
One of the most well-known things in Elgin is their annual Catfish Stomp which is held in December. It's really like a festival with parades, food trucks, and their infamous catfish stew! The town of Lugoff got its name from a Russian engineer who was helping to build the railroad as it came through the area. The cool thing about Lugoff is that Highway 1 runs right through it!
Even though they're smaller towns, Lugoff- Elgin has an awesome food scene! First there's Show Me Nutrition which has a variety of delicious shakes, teas, and a seasonal menu that is always being updated. The staple in the area is Lugoff's House of Pizza which stays busy and has been operating for many years. For the beer lovers, there's Random Tap which has over 30 different beers on draft.
For something fun to do in the area, check out Goat Daddy's Farm where you can not only purchase humanely raised products, but also participate in some cool events. The area also has a distillery called Gorget that produces vodka, rum, whiskey, and bourbon that you can even take a tour of!

Cantina 76
Cantina 76 is one of those Columbia staples that everyone has come to know and love. What originally started as a local restaurant has taken off and is now expanding into other areas in South Carolina, starting with Greenville. Cantina 76 has taken the traditional taco and put a modern twist on it, creating unique and delicious variations of many Mexican favorites.
For many of our team members, our lunch together wasn’t the first time we’d had the chance to enjoy Cantina. In fact, more than a few happy hours have started or ended at the Devine Street location. Nonetheless, we wanted to get out and try some of the other great items on the menu, outside of our typical favorites.
We tried a wide variety of items from the menu this time in order say for certainty what we already knew: Cantina’s food is delicious. From their craft tacos, to their enchiladas, to their quesadillas and everything in between, you really can’t go wrong with this menu. And as for appetizers and snacks, the trio of salsa, guac and queso really is the perfect after work snack.
And since we mentioned Happy Hour, we can’t leave out the specialty margaritas that Cantina is known for. The Strawberry Basil margarita has always been the fan favorite for our team, but there are a number of other great options on the menu. Also, for those who may not be fans of tequila, there’s a full bar and excellent bartenders to make your favorite drink.
Summary? You really can’t go wrong with Cantina. The service is exceptional, the chef is incredibly creative and always puts something new and special on the menu, and the restaurant atmosphere is one where you can have a delicious lunch or a relaxed evening with coworkers or friends. Definitely check them out on Devine Street or Main Street, and now in Downtown Greenville right on N. Main Street!

Cafe Strudel
Café Strudel is one of the staples of West Columbia. Since opening in 1977, Café Strudel has taken up residence at multiple different locations along State Street, outgrowing each spot due to the high demand from its clients.
Traditionally known as “The Brunch Spot” in town to visit, Café Strudel offers so much more, including a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with breakfast served all day long.
As our company has grown, we’ve found it increasingly necessary to take time to pause, get everyone together and try some of these local favorite eateries. We were lucky enough to get almost the entire team out to Café Strudel for lunch on the back patio to enjoy things like their classic club sandwich, their duck fat fries and their chicken salad sandwich.
But no trip to Café Strudel would be complete without at least one person ordering the Hangover Hashbrowns that Café Strudel is known for. Made with hashbrowns, eggs, peppers and more, they are certainly a “must-try” when you visit.
The service is always great, there are plenty of seating options both indoors and outdoors, and you can always count on a great meal and a fresh squeezed mimosa when you visit Café Strudel. Be sure to stop by early on the weekends, as it is a popular spot and fills up quickly! And, if we’re lucky, there will be a second location opening up in Lexington later in 2017!

Spotted Salamander
This month, we went looking for another great restaurant to put a spotlight on, and we received a recommendation from one of our team members to check out Spotted Salamander. She described it as a “cozy lunch spot with a great atmosphere and even better food”. Of course we had to go check it out!
What we found was a lovely little cafe on the corner of Richland and Pickens Street in the heart of downtown. Inside is a renovated restaurant, with great touches such as the refinished original hardwood floors, beadboard walls and a ton of natural light flooding the restaurant through the large front windows. The atmosphere feels very casual, with a large table running the entire length of the main eating area. Colorful chalkboard menus line the walls highlighting the specials of the day.
Now, when you go to Spotted Salamander to give it a try, you have to do two things: trust the wait staff’s recommendations and try the specials. The incredibly friendly and welcoming staff lends their opinion as to what you may enjoy. They have a detailed knowledge of the menu and the specials of the day, and didn’t steer anyone in the wrong direction when it came to their meals.
We tried a wide variety of the menu, from the BBQ Chicken Salad to the Brisket Sandwich to the Crab Cake Salad, the special of the day. In addition, we made sure to try a few of the appetizers, including the cheese board and the deviled eggs (which changes daily, we had the house pork chicharron with pepper vinegar bbq sauce… amazing). All of the food was delicious, as well as light yet filling. The real treat however was their specialty dessert: the Cronut.
If you don’t know what a cronut is, don’t worry, you’re probably not alone. It’s a donut made out of croissant dough and covered in the topping of the day. But, you have to trust us when we tell you that you have to have one. Ours was covered with Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal and icing, leaving everyone with a satisfied sugar rush by the time the meal was over. We also happened to have a vendor bring us by a Nutella covered cronut: Just as good, if not better than the Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
Overall thoughts? Incredible meal, great wait staff, fantastic atmosphere, and decadent desserts. Spotted Salamander is only open for lunch, but take an hour to give them a try. We promise you won’t regret it!

Publico Kitchen & Tap
One of our goals for 2016 is to get out in our community and support some great local businesses. One way that we are planning to do this is by trying out some new restaurants around town and providing a review. We kicked off our first review by trying out Publico Kitchen & Tap, located in the Five Points district of Downtown Columbia.
Publico Kitchen & Tap opened up last Fall in the space previously occupied by Garibaldi’s on Greene Street. According to a press release received by the Free Times in August, Publico describes themselves as offering “a unique selection of tacos, burritos, burgers and salads created with seasonal, local produce and farm-raised, hormone-free, humanely raised meats”.
When we visited the restaurant, one of the first things that we noticed was the 54 beers that are on tap, as well as a wide variety of other drinks. Our meal began with a selection of appetizers, including the edamame, nachos and bacon wrapped stuffed jalapeños. The stuffed jalapeños were a clear fan favorite among our team members, providing a unique blend of spices and cheese that came together perfectly.
For our entrees, we had a wide selection of dishes ranging from the Publico and Thai Shrimp Burgers to the Fried Oyster Tacos. For sides, we were given the choice between sticky rice, fries, Mexican sweet corn and tortilla chips. Most of our team members tried the fries (which went well with the house burgers) or the sticky rice (perfect with the tacos).

The Grand
A recent transformation has taken place right on the 1600 Block of Main Street, Columbia's newest restaurant combined with a high-end bowling alley and bar scene.
Conveniently located in the heart of downtown Columbia , the continually growing Main Street area is the prime spot for dining, shopping, and entertainment. We wanted to see for ourselves how GRAND this space truly is!
On the restaurant side, their menu is filled with savory entrees such as the Lowcountry Shrimp & Grits and Southern Pork Belly. They offer an Express Lunch option during the week and perfect brunch options for the weekend. [See Their Insanely Appetizing Menu → https://www.thegrandonmain.com/menu]
Our team enjoyed the Thai Style Calamari, Southwest Loaded Fries, and their Cackalacky quesadillas (yum!).
On the entertainment side, the Grand combines all of our past time favorites: classic games (like battleship and jenga), seven bowling lanes, a putting green outside, and much more!
If you're looking to unwind, luckily for you, The Grand offers two separate bars. One with an extensive list of beers and bourbons that run down the entire bar. Another one is kept secret, downstairs, where you have the freedom to refill whenever and sample various beers/wines.
It's endless fun for a whole group, come see for yourselves!
