The Coffee Shelf
In 2016, The Coffee Shelf opened its doors in Chapin, SC and they had a goal to become the central meeting spot for the area. Not only can people come in and enjoy a delicious cup of coffee while reading a great book, they can also meet up with church groups, book clubs, finish school assignments, and even host book launches.
The Coffee Shelf truly has some of the best coffee in the area. Not only is their house brew coffee spectacular, they also have lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, and more. If you're not a hot coffee drinker, don't worry because they have several iced and frozen options for you to try. Something unique about the shop is that they've created a menu of drinks based on different literary characters!
Community involvement is very important at the Coffee Shelf. Not only have they become a go-to community gathering spot, but since opening they've also been raising money for a local charity called Sistercare. On top of that, they host a yearly Fall Art Festival for the town.

Hazelwood Brewing Company
In 2019, Hazelwood Brewing Company opened their doors in Downtown Lexington and they've been brewing amazing beers ever since. What makes the brewery unique from others is that they're a farm-inspired brewery and have been growing their own hops and ingredients for 17 years. They actually grow these products at their farm in Camden named Hazelwood.
The brewery is very community oriented and a favorite local spot in Lexington. Hazelwood is a great place for people to come gather, hangout, and share a beer. Also, along with their 10 beers on tap, they have indoor and outdoor seating areas, fire pits, and food trucks.
Next time you're in Downtown Lexington, make sure to come try out some of their amazing beers and see what's good at the wood!

Hendrix
In 2019, Hendrix opened its doors in the heart of Downtown Columbia. Located on Main Street, the restaurant and bar brings people the best of both worlds by having a farm to table fine dining restaurant downstairs with a lounge and rooftop bar upstairs. Their goal upon opening was to ensure they checked the boxes of a lot of people and to provide a unique experience.
The restaurant switches their menus seasonally, so there’s always something new to try! Hendrix has a great appreciation for the local community and to highlight this, they try to use locally sourced products.
Come check them out whether it’s to enjoy a beverage and a burger on their rooftop bar or for a nicer dinner downstairs… they have it all!

Tiffany's Meeting Place
Tiffany's Sweets, Eats & Meeting Place has been a family owned business in Columbia since its opening in 1977. Before moving to their newest location in Northeast Columbia, they originally started out in Columbia Mall. Tiffany's specializes in baked goods that are all made from scratch and they've become well- know for their Petit Fours. Fun fact, they sell about a quarter million of them each year.
What's so special about Tiffany's is how they're not just a bakery. They now have a full restaurant along with a bar that has 22 beers on tap that are primarily local. Tiffany's differentiates themselves from their competitors by being farm to table fresh, bringing a different vibe, and having a wide variety of options. Lula Drake
Lula Drake
For our Spotlight this month, we have Mary Lane Sloan sitting with Tim Gardner, owner + head sommelier of Lula Drake.
They started in 2016, built around biodynamic, organic and sustainable wines.
What Mary Lane loves about Lula Drake is they let you try anything and all of the employees are great listeners in helping pin point the best wine for you. Tim carefully spends time exposing everyone to wines they aren't familiar with (finally time to take a break from the Chardonnay and Pinot Gris).
Finding the right building was the key to the business. Once they came across this long narrow space with three floors, they found a trap door to a basement with Lula Drake's sea trunk. "The name was in the building" per Tim's wife. In the trunk they even found Lula's calling card with the gold symbols. After adding a stem to resemble a wine glass, the well-known logo we see on Main Street was born.
They boast an impressive upstair event space that holds 100+ people. "It has it's own personality, but very much tied to the downstair space" says Tim.
Lula Drake was created to open the eyes (and palettes) of people in Columbia to things that are different. They're here to help this great district stay local.
There is a variety of this wine list that you don't typically fine in Columbia. It's a place to stretch your imagination with wines that don't have big marketing, but great roots and stories from all over the world.
What's new and fresh for Lula Drake?
Fortified wines; very special spirits that took them a long time to find.
It's a wonderful place to grab a small plate and enjoy a relaxing beverage. They provide a great craft beer selection and amazing grower champagne list for non-wine drinkers.
Lula Drake is open from Tuesday to Saturday at 4 pm and closes at 10 PM on Tuesdays-Wednesdays and 12 AM on Thursday-Saturdays.

Batesburg-Leesville
Halfway between Columbia and Augusta is where you'll find the town of Batesburg-Leesville!
ABOUT THE AREA
Halfway between Columbia and Augusta is where you'll find the town of Batesburg-Leesville! In the 1800s they were actually founded as two separate towns. Batesburg served the Augusta and Saluda side when it came to trading posts while Leesville served the Columbia and Lexington side. Since there was so much overlap, in 1992 they became one town! They now have a joint schools and Chamber of Commerce.
Batesburg-Leesville has some amazing local eateries for you to check out! One of our favorites is the iCrave Cafe which actually started as a pastry and coffee truck. They now have an established location and make some of the best treats and frappuccinos. There's also Homeland Craft Beer and Wine where you can not only go grab a drink, but also enjoy different activities such as yoga, trivia, and others that get the community involved. Lastly is The Root Cellar which has some fantastic food. One of our favorites on the menu is their hot honey fried chicken sandwich!
One of the main draws to the area is Lake Murray as it's only a stones throw away! You can enjoy different lake activities such as boating, camping, and more. Just outside of Batesburg-Leesville is The Big Mo drive in movie theater which is a great activity for a date night or family night. They have three different screens that date back to the 1950s and they're open from late spring until early fall.
When it comes to housing in the area, many people choose to live here that work in either Columbia or Augusta, but don't necessarily want to live in those areas. The good thing about living in Batesburg-Leesville is that housing is quite affordable. You can find great homes all the way from $70K up to the millions, it just depends on what you're looking for. The area is truly the epitome of a southern town.

ABOUT THE AREA
The town of Gilbert, SC was founded in the early 1700s when Jonathan Gilbert settled on the land just southwest of Columbia. Gilbert was really put on the map due to trains coming through from Columbia to Aiken. You can even visit the Gilbert Train Depot which was recently renovated in 2012 and it has now become a museum for the town.
Looking for fun things to do in Gilbert? Then you have to check out the Clinton Sease Farm especially in the Fall. The whole family will enjoy corn mazes, pumpkin and strawberry picking, and spooky trails for Halloween. One thing comes to mind when talking about housing in Gilbert and that's the Whiteplains Plantation which is an entire community based around airplanes. Every house in the neighborhood has their own private hangar that they can use as they please. Many people choose to live in the town because of its close proximity to Lake Murray and Downtown Lexington. It's also close to I-26 making travel to Augusta and Aiken a more feasible commute. ABOUT THE AREA
Chapin, SC also known as the capitol of Lake Murray, was founded in 1890 and it's one of the most charming towns in all of Columbia. Chapin has a good mixture of being both a rural town and a lake town. It's location is very convenient as you can get to Downtown Columbia in only 30 minutes and Greenville in about an hour. The area is also very popular because of it's variety of neighborhoods as well as great schools and infrastructure.
When it comes to housing in Chapin there are two types of people. There are those who move to the town because they want to live on the lake or at least have access to it and the other type wants the small southern town charm where they can get more square footage for a more attractive price. Homes in Chapin can range anywhere from the low $100,000s all the way into the millions. If you're looking for new construction Chapin just might be the place for you since they have the space to accommodate it.
Eateries in Chapin are mainly locally owned and we have a few favorites such as Higher Ground Char House, Catch 22, and the Coffee Shelf. Since it's located on a lake, many activities in Chapin are water related but there is also the Crooked Creek Park. The park has several walking trails, a disc golf course, tennis courts, baseball and soccer fields and it even has indoor facilities such as a gym and conference rooms.

Cantina 76
Cantina 76 is one of those Columbia staples that everyone has come to know and love. What originally started as a local restaurant has taken off and is now expanding into other areas in South Carolina, starting with Greenville. Cantina 76 has taken the traditional taco and put a modern twist on it, creating unique and delicious variations of many Mexican favorites.
For many of our team members, our lunch together wasn’t the first time we’d had the chance to enjoy Cantina. In fact, more than a few happy hours have started or ended at the Devine Street location. Nonetheless, we wanted to get out and try some of the other great items on the menu, outside of our typical favorites.
We tried a wide variety of items from the menu this time in order say for certainty what we already knew: Cantina’s food is delicious. From their craft tacos, to their enchiladas, to their quesadillas and everything in between, you really can’t go wrong with this menu. And as for appetizers and snacks, the trio of salsa, guac and queso really is the perfect after work snack.
And since we mentioned Happy Hour, we can’t leave out the specialty margaritas that Cantina is known for. The Strawberry Basil margarita has always been the fan favorite for our team, but there are a number of other great options on the menu. Also, for those who may not be fans of tequila, there’s a full bar and excellent bartenders to make your favorite drink.
Summary? You really can’t go wrong with Cantina. The service is exceptional, the chef is incredibly creative and always puts something new and special on the menu, and the restaurant atmosphere is one where you can have a delicious lunch or a relaxed evening with coworkers or friends. Definitely check them out on Devine Street or Main Street, and now in Downtown Greenville right on N. Main Street!

Cafe Strudel
Café Strudel is one of the staples of West Columbia. Since opening in 1977, Café Strudel has taken up residence at multiple different locations along State Street, outgrowing each spot due to the high demand from its clients.
Traditionally known as “The Brunch Spot” in town to visit, Café Strudel offers so much more, including a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with breakfast served all day long.
As our company has grown, we’ve found it increasingly necessary to take time to pause, get everyone together and try some of these local favorite eateries. We were lucky enough to get almost the entire team out to Café Strudel for lunch on the back patio to enjoy things like their classic club sandwich, their duck fat fries and their chicken salad sandwich.
But no trip to Café Strudel would be complete without at least one person ordering the Hangover Hashbrowns that Café Strudel is known for. Made with hashbrowns, eggs, peppers and more, they are certainly a “must-try” when you visit.
The service is always great, there are plenty of seating options both indoors and outdoors, and you can always count on a great meal and a fresh squeezed mimosa when you visit Café Strudel. Be sure to stop by early on the weekends, as it is a popular spot and fills up quickly! And, if we’re lucky, there will be a second location opening up in Lexington later in 2017!
